SAN DIEGO, CALIF. (Nov. 6, 2018) The Miller Hull Partnership, an international, award-winning architecture and planning firm, is proud to announce it received two AIA San Diego Design Awards on Thursday, Nov. 1. IDEA1 was awarded an Honor Award and Del Mar Civic Center was awarded a Merit Award.

IDEA1 is the genesis project to the new I.D.E.A. District, which focuses on attracting entrepreneurial and artistic individuals and institutions. A vibrant, mixed-use cluster targeting design and technology jobs, IDEA1 supports innovation-based economic development by creating a human-scaled environment that matters. The full-city block development mixes offices, residential, fitness and restaurants to encourage social and business connections among inhabitants and the broader neighborhood and community. To reinforce a mix of live, work and play experiences, the HUB, a large, open courtyard, is designed to be a permanent living room for the community. IDEA1 was completed in 2017.

“IDEA1 serves as a catalyst for community and innovation and that’s something the Downtown San Diego area needed,” said Ben Dalton, principal at Miller Hull and design lead for IDEA1. “It’s designed to bring people and ideas together in an emerging area of downtown. Quite directly, it understands its place in the urban environment.”

Completed in June of this year, the new Del Mar Civic Center resolves a Southern California village’s longstanding need for a centralized venue where people can come together to celebrate community and exercise civic engagement. The majority of the site is dedicated to public open space with planted gardens, active and passive courtyards, and an area for the community farmer’s market. The Civic Center consolidates primary public functions in one location, and places them at the heart of the coastal town.

“City Halls have evolved into being much more than places representing civic gravitas,” said Mike Jobes, principal at Miller Hull and design principal for Del Mar Civic Center. “They are a public investment in the infrastructure for the social aspects of community, where civic identity is formed through the ritual of public gatherings that are made possible by these spaces.”
