Miller Hull and Lewis created the new Lewis headquarters near Pike Place Market. Beginning with a visioning workshop, the team reviewed workplace trends and ways to create places to meet, display, produce and innovate, among other things. The result relocated the building site to an historic 1800s era former livery stable. Although charming, the space offered both design challenges and opportunities. Through inventive solutions, the new structure retains the original character of the building, while incorporating modern amenities required in a contemporary workplace.

The 25,000-square foot Lewis office comprises the top two floors including a new penthouse level, and is certified LEED Platinum. The open concept enables an egalitarian culture of employee owners. Expansive gathering spaces include a “living room” that can accommodate 150 people and numerous informal gathering spaces. Original wood structure and exposed brick are also featured, while repurposed wood from the building is used for table tops, benches, and furniture throughout. A central open space highlights Lewis projects displayed on an abstract map creatively utilizing nails, a basic trade tool that represents the company’s scope of work throughout the Puget Sound region, and exemplifies that it takes many pieces to make a whole, just like an employee-owned company.
