***FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE***
SEATTLE, June 22, 2020 – As protests continue across the U.S and throughout the world, Miller Hull stands with the Black Lives Matter movement, protesters and those fighting to end violence, police brutality and systemic racism.
In witnessing the events over the past two weeks, we have listened and engaged in numerous firm-wide conversations, which brought attention to our blind spots and failings when it comes to race at Miller Hull. As a result, we are actively working to strengthen our organization to better reflect our commitment to racial and social justice and have committed to specific actions in every aspect of our practice.
Reflection
We will continue to educate ourselves about race, including hiring a third-party consultant to provide our entire staff with racial justice and implicit bias training.
Organization
We will commit to developing a racial diversity, equity and inclusion action plan by the end of 2020. We also commit to establishing a committee to focus on and advise firm leadership on these issues.
Recruitment
We will commit to name-blind resume reviews and will conduct active outreach for new positions through the National Organization of Minority Architects and other similar networks.
Community
We will continue Open Studio, a program created by Miller Hull in 2018 to introduce BIPOC students to architecture, expanding it to our San Diego studio and increasing outreach to local schools. We invite other architecture firms to join us.
Leadership Development
We will include diversity in our criteria for leadership development and promotions. We will continue to actively sponsor BIPOC at Miller Hull.
Charitable Contributions and Scholarships
We will include equity, diversity and inclusion in our criteria for our scholarship and charitable contribution programs.
Clients and Projects
We will continue to actively seek clients and projects that share our values, including racial and social justice. We will embrace equity and justice in all our designs.
We recognize these actions are just a start and we still have a lot of work to do. As we continue to work as a collective, we commit to creating a more equitable Miller Hull and a more just community within the architecture profession.
