The Miller Hull Partnership will provide pre-design services for a 32,000-square-foot addition to the Washington State Public Health Laboratories at 1610 N.E. 150th St. in Shoreline, the Seattle-based architecture firm said in press materials.
The facility is operated by the Washington State Department of Health. It provides diagnostic and analytical services for the assessment and surveillance of infectious, communicable, genetic and chronic diseases, and environmental health concerns, Miller Hull said.
The addition is part of a 20-year master plan to modernize and update the Public Health Laboratories, and was funded prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, said Jessica Baggett, a spokeswoman for the department, in an email.
Completion of the plan will make the lab more prepared for pandemics like COVID-19 or other diseases in the future, she said.
The addition is estimated to cost about $27 million, but that could change as construction is two years away, she said.
Miller Hull principal Rich Whealan is project manager for the pre-design. He said the project will positively impact the safety of people in the state.
“Whether it is our shared expectation that the food we feed our children is safe, the safety of our drinking water, or other biological or radiological threats, we can count on the Public Health Lab to safeguard the day-to-day lives of all Washington citizens,” he said.
