The Deschutes Public Library District Board Selects The Miller Hull Partnership and Steele Associates to Bring the Community’s Vision for Public Libraries Across Central Oregon to Life

8-1-2021 | News

August, Seattle, WA — The Deschutes Public Library District Board has selected The Miller Hull Partnership, LLP, and Steele Associates Architects LLC as the architectural team to design a series of libraries across Central Oregon. The selected projects include an expanded Redmond Library and new Central Library, as well as extensive renovations for libraries located in Downtown Bend, East Bend, La Pine, Sisters, and Sunriver. The new Central Library in Bend will include a child learning center, technology hub, and performing arts space for the community to gather and explore.

Deschutes County voted in support of the Library’s bond measure to expand and bring new life to libraries across the county. The bond will fund the design and construction of the 100,000 square-foot Central Library to serve all Deschutes County residents in addition to doubling the square footage of the Redmond Library and updating existing libraries.

“We are eager to bring to life the voters’ vision of designing and updating library spaces throughout Deschutes County, and The Miller Hull Partnership and Steele Associates are poised to make that vision a reality,” said Library Director Todd Dunkelberg. “Both firms have extensive experience in sustainable design and are steeped in the Pacific Northwest experience. We are excited to work with them as we update and expand Library buildings and services to better serve the people of Deschutes County.”

The Library selected Miller Hull and Steele Associates from among five proposals after requesting qualifications, a detailed proposal, and an interview.

Miller Hull has an extensive background in designing libraries and community spaces throughout the Pacific Northwest, including Renton Library, Vancouver Community Library, Seattle’s Green Lake Community Center, and University of Washington’s Odegaard Undergraduate Library & Learning Commons. Bend-based Steele Associates has designed a number of iconic building projects in Deschutes County, including facilities for Central Oregon Community College, Oregon State University-Cascades and school districts throughout the region.
