East County Offices & Archives, Center for Coastal Studies, and Parco are Recognized for Design Excellence

(San Diego, CA) May 2022 — On May 19, The Miller Hull Partnership was recognized for not one, but three projects at the AIA San Diego Design Awards — East County Offices & Archives, Center for Coastal Studies, and Parco. The three projects, ranging in scale, site, and typology are honored for design excellence and recognition of their contribution to the environment and their respective communities.

East County Offices & Archives
Honor Award
As the first zero net energy archive facility in the U.S., the East County Office & Archives has become a union of the past and present — a safe for the community’s records, and a light-filled, welcoming office for those working as gatekeepers and recorders.  Not only was energy and efficiency prioritized, but also the wellness of civil servants daily supporting their community.

The one-story building utilizes tilt-up concrete panels and open web steel joists for fast construction and column-free spaces that house open offices, a counter for public services, and the archival vault. Tilt-up concrete not only supported the project’s budget and schedule but also became a signature architectural element for the facility.

Center for Coastal Studies
Merit Award
Originally a saltwater storage facility, the new Center for Coastal Studies sits atop the seawall, immersed in the physical environs of their study – the intersection of earth and water.

Focused on long-term durability while maximizing reduction in embodied and operational carbon, the original concrete storage tank was preserved as the base of the newly constructed Center, maintaining the significant carbon investment already in place. The new CCS facility is built to blend into the beautiful natural history of Scripps Campus, operate as an extension of its environment, and support the next generation of scientists who help us better understand and mitigate our impact on the coastal environment.

Parco
Merit Award
Parco is a carefully curated urban development in National City that complements the use and scale of the adjacent neighborhoods while setting a precedent for the kind of responsive urban infill that will draw people from near and far for years to come.

The ground floor engages in dialogue with the city through transparency, local art, and reclamation of alley space for patron dining.  There is also a robust commitment to neighborhood-scaled retail, which energizes the urban experience without contributing to the gentrification that typical developments often incur. Above the ground plane, the residential units focus on efficiency – solving affordability through San Diego’s first co-living model.
