The Miller Hull Partnership
Sustainability has been a foundational value at The Miller Hull Partnership, which was founded in 1977 in Seattle and completed a number of award-winning earth-sheltered and solar buildings in the early 1980s. Since then, the firm has designed five certified Living Buildings, most recently Loom House and The Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design—which also won a METROPOLIS Planet Positive Award in 2021. Miller Hull has also completed 13 LEED-certified projects in the past four years, four of them certified Platinum. One of these, the U.S. embassy in Niamey, Niger, is the first building in West Africa to be certified at this level. The firm’s exemplary track record on sustainable design has been celebrated by its peers with eight AIA Committee on the Environment Awards.
Today Miller Hull has two offices in Seattle and San Diego, with a design approach focused on doing good, going deep, and being bold. One of the firm’s ongoing initiatives is EMission Zero, which targets the elimination of greenhouse gas emissions caused by buildings. Through EMission Zero, the firm commits to voluntarily purchase Green-e certified carbon offsets to cover the up-front embodied emissions of each built project it designs.
