The South Lab Addition will provide state-of-the-art facilities which create healthy, adaptable workspaces that prove that lab spaces can satisfy responsible material sourcing criteria and carbon emission reduction goals without sacrificing performance.
The South Lab Addition is a 33,500 SF expansion to the existing Public Health Lab campus in Shoreline, Washington primarily composed of new lab spaces and offices for the Environmental Lab Services Department. The new facility responds to evolving operational demands, promotes occupant health and well-being, and enhances connections to the surrounding community context. Set within an existing campus, the addition links to an internal circulation spine for a safe, secure, and efficient lab workflow. Site improvements offer healthy outdoor space accessible to the public, public art, integrated native plantings, and makes stormwater treatment a visible site feature. This addition provides a contemporary public face and state-of-the-art facilities for the valuable work the institution performs.
The South Lab Building will be a high performing building consistent with state’s Zero Energy and carbon emissions reduction goals. To balance the needs of a systems-intensive lab building with these energy use reduction goals, the design employs a highly efficient building envelope and mechanical systems, and energy generation through photovoltaics. All building materials have been thoroughly vetted against lab performance, human health and responsible sourcing criteria. The site has been designed with native plantings to be naturally resilient.
