San Diego, California (March 1, 2019) — The Miller Hull Partnership, an international, award-winning architecture and planning firm, has received a 2019 WoodWorks Wood Design Award for Wood in Government Buildings for the Del Mar Civic Center.
At its core, the Del Mar Civic Center is an expression of place and civic commitment. Using local and natural materials, the design of the complex provides welcoming gathering spaces for civic users, public visitors and everyone in between.
Located in the heart of Del Mar Village overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the Del Mar Civic Center’s design is derived from its local context: residential in scale and built using warm, natural materials, such as wood and integrally-colored concrete inspired by the sandstone bluffs below. Low slung in stature, the interior is open and features exposed wood beams, which take their inspiration from the needle-pattern of the region’s Torrey pine. A cupola tops the space and, paired with operable clerestory windows, provides natural ventilation.
“We were excited by the Coastal Craftsman architecture of Del Mar characterized by an expressed wood structure,” said Mike Jobes, principal at Miller Hull and design principal for the project. “Wood is a beautiful material that not only reflects the area of Del Mar, but adds depth and texture that gives the Center comfortable human scale.”
The jury for the 2019 WoodWorks Wood Design Award for Wood in Government Buildings included Patricia Centeno, AIA, LEED AP, Associate Principal, BAR Architects; Michael E. Hickok, FAIA, Founding Senior Principal, Hickok Cole Architects; Ray Kimsey, AIA, LEED AP, President, Niles Bolton Associates; and Tanya Luthi, PE, Senior Associate, Fast + Epp.
