Alex Zink will be presenting “Dowel-Laminated Timber: Advancing Mass Timber Acoustics & Health” at AIA National this June.
How can mass timber systems enhance acoustics, air quality, and sustainability at scale? This session will review Miller Hull’s four recent library and office projects (40,000 to 100,000 sq. ft.) that integrate acoustic dowel-laminated timber (DLT) to deliver healthy, high-performance environments.
Presenters will highlight how acoustic DLT mitigates noise, eliminates drop ceilings, and avoids glues that compromise indoor air quality. Join us to explore savings with embodied carbon versus steel and concrete, BIM coordination for clean ceilings, and best practices for hybrid construction. You’ll leave with actionable strategies for advancing resilience, performance, and innovation in mass timber design.
“I hope that in my career I can help improve cities to make them more walkable, equitable, green, sustainable, and enjoyable for people, and to help limit sprawl and suburban development. Mass timber construction is key to a lot of these goals, and although there are challenges – sustainable wood sourcing, cost, moisture protection – I…
