Map

The Torrey Pines Center South building on the University of California’s San Diego campus provides various technology, human resources, planning and development departments with flexible and dynamic workspaces. This 90,000-square-foot phased renovation creates modernized office spaces that fit the requirements of each department, maximizing open, semi-private and private spaces while creating hubs that encourage social interaction.

The 1984 office building is currently undergoing a comprehensive multi-phase renovation that incorporates Red List-free materials, reduces energy consumption and is positioned to pursue WELL certification or Living Building Challenge Petal Certification. The existing building features a series of three courtyards that connect four buildings and three levels by exterior circulation paths and balconies. The renovation also provides equitable access to views of the dramatic bluffs over the Pacific Ocean.

In addition to interior architectural improvements, the project includes the renovation of the existing mechanical system and replacement of the existing electrical systems, as well as code-required upgrades to fire protection, egress and universal access.

Level 2

The renovation of the second floor of Torrey Pines Center South provides modern hybrid office spaces for UCSD’s Human Resources, Real Estate, Payroll, and Information Technology Services (ITS) departments. This complete interior overhaul creates a welcoming work environment for the departments to thrive. A new exterior steel entry canopy and civic plaza allows a shared, centralized second-floor lobby that simplifies wayfinding for visitors and serves as an amenity space for occupants to gather and enjoy views to the adjacent golf course and ocean.

The scope includes Level 2 restrooms and showers and the addition of a unisex restroom and shower, with hospitality-like finishes and lighting. The variety of meeting rooms support the functions of each department and have a high level of acoustic privacy to ensure confidentiality. The 120-degree workstations with privacy panels suit the need for privacy. The architectural finishes are similar to those used on the third floor, with the exception of wall colors. Users requested a more vibrant color palette for the furniture, fixtures and equipment, which pop against the neutral architectural finishes.

Level 3

The renovation of the third floor of Torrey Pines Center South provides a flexible and dynamic work environment for UCSD’s ITS department. The variety of space types support all kinds of working styles, including immersive focus work, team focus work, agile project management, stand up meetings, informal and formal meetings, cultural and personal exchanges, and team development. This new space also provides equitable access to natural light, views, circulation and amenities. The multi-function HIVE space welcomes visitors and houses the Tech Hub where students and employees can bring their laptops to the Help Desk, and gives occupants an amenity for informal meeting, collaboration or work space.

A semi-public, convertible conference room can accommodate 50 occupants and is outfitted with a demountable wall to subdivide the space into two smaller meeting rooms. Custom movable panels in the INNOVATION space allow users to reconfigure the area to suit their needs. Open plan linear workbenches simplify the shared spaces and maximize breakout spaces for ad-hoc team collaboration. Wall-length glass writing boards encourage team brainstorming and scrums.

Level 4

The renovation of the fourth floor is currently in progress.
