SEATTLE (Nov. 29,2018) — The Miller Hull Partnership, an international, award-winning architecture and planning firm, is proud to announce it received an AIA Seattle Honorable Mention on Monday, Nov. 5 for the 8th & Republican Mixed-Use Development, a full-block revitalization in South Lake Union developed by The Wolff Company.
In collaboration with Runberg Architecture Group, 8th & Republican blurs the line between public and private space in a community setting. In addition to housing units and commercial space, the design team set the building back from the street at mid-block to provide a generous public courtyard and make room for the building’s iconic Megastoop, an elevated public walkway that forms a green pocket park. This approach was the result of a perfect partnership: Miller Hull’s expertise in public design and Runberg’s knowledge of multi-family design.
“It all came together when we realized that by configuring the building diagonally across the site, we were able to provide more units and a public space,” said Mike Jobes, principal at Miller Hull and design principal on the project.
The jury was impressed with the aesthetic of the design, enthusiastically wanting to give it a high-five and be friends with the project itself. The jury said 8th & Republican stood above the masses of multi-family submissions, applauding it as a great example of how projects could be sited and how consequential decision-making can be beneficial and successful.
The 2018 AIA Seattle Honor Awards jury members include Sunil Bald (New York), Will Laufs (Berlin/New York), Andrea Love (Boston) and Dan Maginn, FAIA (Kansas City). The awards event was moderated by Elizabeth Golden, assistant professor of architecture at the University of Washington.
