***FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE***
SAN DIEGO, Calif., Oct. 30, 2020 – The Miller Hull Partnership, LLP, an internationally recognized architecture and planning firm, is proud to announce that the third phase of the San Ysidro Land Port of Entry (SYLPOE) received a Merit Award for Architecture from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) San Diego chapter during the 2020 San Diego Design Awards, a prestigious program honoring innovative design, with an emphasis on sustainability over a broad range of categories.
The SYLPOE is the busiest land port in the Western Hemisphere, processing eight percent of all people entering the United States. As a newly completed gateway, it creates a welcome, streamlined point of arrival that supports the interconnected relationship of San Diego and Tijuana. The jury appreciated the LEED Platinum impetus driving this massive and challenging mega-project, with energy interventions that include geothermal and stormwater.
“I’d like to thank the entire design and construction team for their dedication, and AIA San Diego for honoring this project with an award,” said Miller Hull Partner Rob Misel. “In its entirety, the San Ysidro Land Port is the culmination of a 10-year journey for Miller Hull and we could not be prouder of the results. Miller Hull has a culture of equity and diversity, and we are especially proud that this project reflects the interconnected relationship of the people and culture in both San Diego and Tijuana.”
The AIA San Diego Design Awards program was created to highlight outstanding architecture; to elevate the standards of great design; and to inspire, educate and influence the public. Originally instituted in 1960 as the biennial “Honor Awards Program,” the program became an annual event in 1982 in response to increased participation, growing AIA visibility and heightened design awareness.
The jury chose 29 award winners from eight categories – Architecture, Interior Architecture, Divine Detail, Unbuilt Design, Urban Design, Residential Design, AIA San Diego Committee Awards, and Student Design Awards. The jury included Mary Katherine Lanzillotta, FAIA, APA, LEED AP; Greg Mella, FAIA, LEED AP BD+C; Joanna Schmickel, AIA, LEED AP; Rick Harlan Schneider, AIA, APA, LEED AP; and Michelle Amt, AIA LEED AP BD+C, WELL AP, five dynamic voices from AIA Washington, D.C.
