Partner Brian Court and principal Cory Mattheis will be leading a session about “Adaptable Structures: Hybrid Steel and Timber Construction” at the annual NASAAC Steel Conference.

Miller Hull’s legacy of environmentally responsible design guides us to consider the optimal use of each material in our buildings. This approach often leads us to hybrid structures that exploit the inherent benefits of steel and timber working in partnership. Steel provides the ideal structural armature for efficient and rational bays, while infill systems in timber provide highly adaptable enclosures. By decoupling the primary structure and the thermal enclosure, buildings can become agile systems capable of  adapting to changing user needs and configurations. Through case studies across different building types and scales, this talk will highlight Miller Hull’s unique approach to hybrid structural systems and explore ideas of adaptability, design for disassembly, and material reuse.

According to Brian, a new era of architecture is upon us. Because the built environment is responsible for 40% of carbon emissions, it’s time for architects to change the way we design buildings. “A lot of people think that the look and feel of a building has to be compromised for sustainability and high performance to…

Cory’s role on projects is that of a compass; he establishes design direction, and makes sure that the conceptual idea is reinforced as the project develops. This includes lots of design studies, iterations, and examinations through sketching and the creation of digital models. But it’s not just carrying out the design vision that Cory loves; it’s communicating that vision,…
